On various dates throughout June, the city of Lisbon celebrates “Festas dos Santos Populares” – Feast Days of the Popular Saints – with a programme of cultural events, street parties and prayers. The main celebrations are for St. Anthony (13 June), St. John (23-24 June) and St. Peter (28-29 June).

The whole city is transformed into a carnival of colour with coloured lights, lanterns and decorations adorning many of the streets. The party peaks on the eve of St. Anthony’s Day with the grand Avenida da Liberdade parade and parties in the Alfama district, where sardines are grilled outside the houses and the narrow streets fill with hundreds of people.

The big St Anthony’s parade, known as the Marchas Populares, on the night of the 12 June is preceded by the marrying of 12 couples from various Lisbon parishes; they parade through the city in stylish vintage cars during the early evening. Later on, the grand parade makes its way along the Avenida da Liberdade and features folk dancing from home and abroad and samba bands, a party favourite.
